Damsel fruit stew is made from small tart yellow-ish, flattened, berries. Yes the damsels can be eaten raw, with salt, or made into a chow with pepper and lime juice, or as a simple preserve brightened with red food colouring.
I think they are best enjoyed stewed almost dried with sugar, ginger and other spices. YUM!
Be careful, Damsel stews use whole fruit, so there may be tiny seeds within.
